Chromebook 1:1 Round table

Deployment

  • Reseller can enterprise enroll the devices for an extra fee
  • There are ways to automate enterprise enrollment if it's being done in house (usb rubber ducky)
  • You can have the students come down during a homeroom/prep and enroll them via an open WAP.

Policy

  • What is acceptable use?
  • Set acceptable use in your handbook - signed by student and parent
  • Set list of repairs and costs so parents and students are aware
  • Take them through a slideshow that details this is not your device, and some common problems/repairs
  • One district sends electronic invoice to parents and puts into student lunch account balance account through custom webapp.
  • Habitual offenders in the 1:1, cannot take them home. They must be used in school only, but that is an administrative decision.
  • Insurance Policy? Cost? Self insured?
  • Who takes the responsibility for enforcing the “use policies?”

Take Home Policy

  • Good acceptable use policy
  • tiered repair policy that more and more expensive
  • get a good device and are durable
  • have a meeting explaining the use policy (give examples of actions that damage chromebooks)
  • have enough spare devices to have a hot swap
  • bill repairs to lunch account

Care and Training

  • How many have students assisting with the care and repair of the devices?
  • Does this model lend itself better for high school or k-8?
  • Brillion has a student intern assisting with repairs- We specifically pick devices based on their repairability
  • Pushpa has recruited 2 interns from local tech college who repair
  • Muskego has Tech Center as part of some tech/business curriculum at the HS, where all HS CB’s are fixed in house. We have agreement with TRA (Milwaukee) for the ones the students cannot fix.
  • Moline (IL) implemented a student led helpdesk - 15 to 20 students that are taking a majority of the repairs.
  • How many 1:1 districts do their own repairs vs a maintenance contract?
  • Internal repair - 111111
  • Maintenance/warranty
  • Factory Warranty Only - 11
  • Additional Warranty -
  • Kiel - We are taking advantage of 1 yr Dell factory warranty in conjunction with TRA insurance on a four year plan more so for physical damage
  • Franklin - We repair very few now since we’ve just contracted with TRA for repairs. They pick up and deliver once per week.

Chromebooks Testing

  • Generally Pearson testing just works on managed chromebooks

MAJOR “GOTCHAS”?

  • Educational (staff use) software that won’t work on a CB?
  • Smartnotebook Express (Cloud version of Smart Notebook)
  • SMART Notebook! Active Inspire (Promethean)
  • Not 100% but ive heard that the grading software for powerschool doesnt work (uses java)
  • Educational (student use) software that won’t work on a CB?
  • Anything that uses java

Taking away MS Office

  • It is posible to remove office in a school district
  • make sure you have extra support when you take away office
  • Some Districts are replacing Windows/Mac Staff computers with chromebooks

1:1 Windows

Didn't Work

  • Microsoft direct access doesn't work for schools (Works better for Win8 and up)
  • Microsoft System center (sccm) - randomly doesn't work
  • Printing AD printers do not work (laptop do not receive published printer)
  • spinning disk hard drives have extremely high failure rate
  • Battery ⇒ battery failure rate at 2 yr rises significant increase
  • Power Supplies ⇒ students wrap chargers too tightly.
  • Teachers ⇒ teachers not willing to come in for summer training. Most teachers didn't see a value in 1:1 devices. Teachers had issues with classroom management. Was a primary issue at Lake Park-Audibon classroom management.

Worked

  • Have uniform hardware. Have ample supply of spare parts for student on hand.
  • Bandwidth ⇒ 200mb - 300mb was not enough (LPA is now is now at a Gig). A gig will be consumed
  • 40G network closet backbone. 10G connection to servers, san, hypervisors
  • Wifi converge 1AP per classroom
  • classroom management software ⇒ netOps ⇒ used to project teachers screen on student laptops
  • screencast-o-mattic to record class lessons
  • don't back students laptops ⇒ needed admin support to not backup laptops
  • screenConnect ⇒ initially for remote support.
  • Schoolgy ⇒ learning management system, allowed teachers and everyone to determine what students had to do
  • PDQ Deploy ⇒ $1000/year (software managment) Link
  • Network Management ⇒ just monitor your network. (LPA) is using MKNagios
  • LPA leased all student technology from CDI computers
